You will be given an NRA PPOTH Text book ahead of the class and it is required reading. You'll also be given an NRA Holster guide booklet.
A strong side friction-fit holster is recommended for this class. No shoulder holsters, ankle holsters , cross draw or waistband holsters are allowed. This is for safety reasons. For the ladies you may also bring a purse holster if you prefer.
For each firearm you qualify ( you can qualify up to 3 for your Orange County Sheriff's permit) you will need to fire around 75 rounds of ammunition for each handgun. Overall you will need 225-300 rounds of ammunition to complete the course of fire.
When you arrive at the class room please leave all ammunition in your vehicles.
NO LIVE AMMUNITION ALLOWED IN THE CLASSROOM.
It's recommended you have 2 extra magazines for each pistol or 2 speedy loaders for each revolver.
Bring all of your revolvers and pistols that you will be qualifying with and your holsters and magazines or speedy loader holders into the classroom. Your firearms should be in some type of carrying case.
It is recommended you bring your own eye and ear protection.
You'll need some type of a cover shirt/vest/or jacket to conceal your firearm.
Please also bring a small flashlight for a low light shooting exercise.
Each student needs to be in good physical shape as this course requires movement including kneeling, squatting, prone positions and movement drills while firing. You need to have the stamina to shoot for many hours during this course. If you have a physical disability that limits your ability please advise.
Your firearms will be inspected by an Instructor when you arrive and all information on your firearms will be recorded for your certificate that you will provide to OCSD or other County Police or Sheriff agencies to show proof of your firearm qualification. The instructors will place your firearm in your holster and turn it upside down and shake it to make sure your holster has good retention.
About the Course
DARELL'S SHOOTING SPORTS is a training provider approved by the Orange County Sheriff's Department for purposes of obtaining a Concealed Carry Weapons Permit. ( )This class is an NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home course that consists of a minimum of 16 hours of classroom, study time and range time. Satisfactory completion of this course may be used in applying for a CCW permit with the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
Classes will have 10 to 20 students and will have from 3 to 5 NRA trained Pistol Instructors working on each range session.
This is not a course for beginning pistol or revolver shooters. It is an intermediate to advanced class. Proof of your handgun skills must be shown prior to taking this course. A certificate from a certified firearms instructor verifying your skill level or a certificate from an approved NRA or other recognized firearm course is required. You can mail a copy of your certificate along with your check to the P.O. Box. You may also meet with Darell or one of his NRA Pistol Instructors for a one hour range session to demonstrate your firearm skills or to improve your skills working with the instructor. There is a charge for the one hour training/skills testing session set by each individual instructor and you will be required to pay the range fees and provide your own firearm and ammunition.
The first portion of this class will be held at 1785 Monrovia in Costa Mesa. It's the old Jim's Towing building on the corner of Monrovia and 18th Street. Our class meets upstairs in the block building. Parking is available on the street and at the Tow yard. The class meets at 7:30 A.M. On a Saturday morning. You will have class until around 11:30 A.M. A guest Police Instructor will do a one hour lecture during the morning session. You will break at 11:30 and drive to the Outdoor range in Chino California catching a quick lunch on your way. Class starts back up on Saturday afternoon at 1 P.M. At the Prado Shooting park located at 17501 Pomona Rincon Road, Chino, CA (Range phone number 909-597-4518 if you get lost) Maps to location will be provided. The first day class will end at 5 P.M. At the end of the first day you will receive a Basic NRA Certificate of Completion.
On Day Two we will meet at the Prado Shooting Park at 8 A.M. Shooting an advanced course of fire taking a one hour break for lunch at noon and completing the day with a written open book test between 4 and 5 P.M. If you complete the course successfully you will receive an advanced NRA certificate and a special certificate listing your firearms from Darell's Shooting Sports to present to your County Sheriff for your CCW permit.
